Multilingual learners and SEND
Recognising Every Learner's Strengths
Pomegranate Literacy™ has been successfully implemented with learners from a wide range of educational profiles, including multilingual learners (ELL/EAL) and students with identified Special Educational Needs (SEN). Its structured, multisensory approach provides multiple pathways to learning, enabling every student to build on their strengths and develop confidence as readers, writers and communicators.
The programme has proven particularly effective for students with SEN because it combines explicit instruction with visual, auditory, verbal and kinaesthetic learning experiences. By providing a variety of strategies, students are able to access learning in ways that best suit their individual needs and learning preferences.
At the same time, Pomegranate Literacy™ recognises that multilingual learners may display characteristics during English language acquisition that can resemble learning difficulties. Differences in letter formation, handwriting, letter orientation, spelling patterns or written presentation may reflect the influence of a student's first language or writing system, rather than indicating an underlying Special Educational Need.
Without an understanding of second-language development, there is a risk that some multilingual learners may be referred for additional learning support when the primary need is explicit language instruction, targeted teaching strategies and sufficient time to acquire English literacy skills.
Pomegranate Literacy™ helps educators distinguish between the typical stages of English language acquisition and indicators that may warrant further investigation. By recognising students' linguistic and cultural backgrounds, teachers can provide more targeted instruction while making better-informed decisions about additional support.
Ultimately, the programme is designed to ensure that multilingual learners are recognised for their strengths, supported appropriately and given every opportunity to achieve their full academic potential.

Supporting Early Identification Through Structured Observation
Pomegranate Literacy™ has been successfully implemented with multilingual learners and students with identified Special Educational Needs (SEN). Its carefully sequenced progression enables teachers to observe each student's development across a broad range of literacy skills, providing valuable insights into both language acquisition and learning needs.
Because every learner follows the same structured pathway, teachers can clearly monitor how students respond to explicit instruction, how quickly they acquire new concepts and where additional support may be required. Patterns in progress over time can help educators distinguish between the expected stages of English language acquisition and learning behaviours that may warrant further investigation.
The programme does not diagnose Special Educational Needs. However, it provides a systematic framework for observation, allowing teachers to identify students who are making expected progress, those who may benefit from targeted intervention and those whose persistent difficulties may indicate the need for further assessment by the school's specialist support team.
By combining structured literacy instruction with continuous formative assessment, Pomegranate Literacy™ helps teachers make more informed educational decisions, ensuring that students receive the right support at the right time.your text here...
