The Programme

Pomegranate Literacy™ is a structured literacy programme designed specifically for multilingual learners. The programme integrates systematic phonics, meaningful reading, purposeful writing, with critical thinking and culturally responsive teaching.

Together, these elements accelerate English language acquisition while developing confident, independent learners.

The programme is built upon three interconnected pillars.

Enhanced Phonics

Students progress through a carefully sequenced phonics programme, moving from individual letter sounds to common digraphs, long vowel patterns and increasingly complex spelling conventions. Each phoneme–grapheme correspondence is introduced using carefully selected familiar vocabulary and meaningful visual images, enabling students to connect sounds, letters and meaning simultaneously. During Phase 1, the illustrations intentionally reflect the shape of each letter, creating strong multisensory links between letter formation, sound, recognition and handwriting.

Handwriting Development

The alphabet is introduced in four carefully sequenced handwriting sets. Beginning with the letter c, students learn letter formations through consistent motor patterns that strengthen handwriting fluency while improving letter recognition and discrimination. Uppercase letters are introduced when students are developmentally ready to understand both their purpose and application within authentic reading and writing.

Daily Sight Words

A new high-frequency sight word is introduced every day within a meaningful sentence.Each word is reinforced throughout guided reading lessons, providing repeated exposure in authentic contexts and supporting vocabulary development, reading fluency and long-term retention.

Daily Guided Reading

Guided reading provides daily opportunities to experience vocabulary, grammar, sentence structures and comprehension strategies in meaningful texts. Students learn to integrate multiple sources of information while reading, rather than relying on a single decoding strategy. Reading Recovery principles are embedded throughout the programme, helping students become flexible, independent problem-solvers when reading unfamiliar words.

Purposeful Writing

Reading and writing develop simultaneously. From the onset, students begin encoding CVC words before progressing towards increasingly complex sentence writing. The programme introduces a structured subject–predicate approach that enables students to compose meaningful sentences with confidence from an early stage. Decoding and encoding continually reinforce one another, strengthening reading, spelling and written communication.

One of the defining features of Pomegranate Literacy™ is the intentional integration of critical thinking throughout every phase of learning.

Students are encouraged not simply to recall information, but to:

Purposeful discussion accompanies every stage of learning, allowing students to develop both oral language and higher-order thinking simultaneously. For learners in the early stages of English acquisition, Google Translate is used strategically as a scaffold to enable students to express sophisticated ideas in their home language before transferring those ideas into English. This approach ensures that language limitations never prevent students from demonstrating their thinking and allows teachers to build increasingly sophisticated English around ideas students already possess. Language becomes a vehicle for thinking—not simply communication.

Building upon the strengths every multilingual learner brings. Pomegranate Literacy™ recognises that multilingual learners arrive with rich linguistic knowledge, cultural experiences and established ways of thinking. Rather than viewing these as barriers, the programme deliberately builds upon students' existing strengths. Teachers are encouraged to identify transferable knowledge from students' home languages while recognising common language patterns that may present challenges when learning English. This culturally responsive approach allows instruction to become increasingly personalised, meaningful and effective.
